Never say no

They do say never say no, but I don't know who they are. Still there are those who wait to be employed and those for a corner shop to rent and the film and acting game is the same. You can wait for the phone to ring or demand a salary, or make a web series and win awards and get noticed. Ewe are all artists and Picasso did ask for a dollar each time he picked up a paint brush. Enough said, but we have always made and invested in films, and had we not many of the pop videos we made back in the day would never have turned into making The Krays, I would never have been able to give myself such a huge credit at the front of the film as Stunt Coordinator and got an instant career bump, and then been able to afford to make my own films etc...

The road trodden is never straight. So, just as I am at think tank conferences at the British Screen Council and with distributors learning a little about on-line morphication, (there spell checker deal with that one!) My wife asks if she can make something for the web. Coincidence my composers (Mar k Blackledge who is brilliant and has his own studios) said his son wanted to direct, so I threw about 20k at setting up a small camera set up to make web series. There was no way they were shooting that on my 5k Red Epics!

After 61 episodes of Shades Of Bad and winning countless awards, we had shot in Norway and Barcelona as well as the UK, just for a laugh and just because we could, and we ended up with a travel show - DORIS VISITS www.DorisVisits.com

Now some 200 travel films later in less than two years, we have an on line travel shop web base and people are booking hotels and cruises through us. You see when I started as a trainee DJ at radio 1 & 2 back in 1973, then went into commercial radio a few years later I never knew I would be cast as the DJ in a TV soap before the decade was out. I never knew once I got into TV that pop videos would be invented or I would produce and direct via a weaving route in and out of action.

I certainly never thought I would be a travel agent. But that is why you should never say no. That is because of volume of content and traffic, and it all came from no where.

So, the hair pin bend, and there always is one. I am given scripts all the time. Some to direct some under the guys of would I direct when what they would really like is for me to produce so they can direct. They are all normally poor. But, I was brought a series of books. Very raunchy female romance books. Why Me !!! ????  Now my wife Jean, now presenter on Doris Visits has often been heard to say that when I am offered female lead things. She nearly dies when I was asked to direct a film with Claire Danes in the USA by a producer who thought my output was female lead (Devil's Gate with Laura Fraser, The Scarlet Tunic with Emma Fielding etc) .... I stray. These books lacked a direction but had legs. It is that wonderful line I am sure is from a Linda Seger I read years and years ago... so we want to buy your script, it just needs a complete rewrite - here's why.....  Years later when I understood Hollywood a little more I wrote my own take on it, The Script Writing Cheat Guide, which I must update. But these books were / are still I have yet changed them that much, but wait. Are still about an older woman released from you will find out what in good time and when she is ready to tell you and can tell you, at an older age into life. So, to cut top the chase, she realises the clock is ticking and she wants to discover what most do in their teens. As an agoraphobic, by a route to be discover she swaps the house for a steel box otherwise know as a cruise ship. It is a fascinating look at life, and somehow I was the fit... female lead, cruise industry - obvious! (no there is no action.)

So, the SOLO CRUISER book series was in development and the table I set up (writer's table, development table) sat and criticised as they do. But I wanted to see ten episodes. Forget film, film is dead. Forget books I have no skills or interest. I needed to see a structure that worked for TV. I have an older Bridget Jones type, we all love her, where she is going but it is a mess. How would you handle it? So far this is what we have done. I have changed each book to be around a real cruise, the books starts the moment you board, ends when you get off. For arguments sake, Southampton to Southampton, round the Canary Islands. Then we have a time line, we have a looming end, we have a fixture. Book one ended up being placed into a cruise template of the Canaries that was Doris Visits Azura Cruise A628. Book 2 ended up being based on Arcadia Cruise round the Baltics and the third of Violet Becket's story, now more confident in direction uses bits and bobs of cruises in the Caribbean.

Look it is a tough life, but someone has to do it, and remember this is years of work with no fees and me investing, so that would put many off. I happen to thrive on it. My connection was this other little piece in the jigsaw, Amazon Editor Simon Okhill who came to me and got me to put my Brit Flick Freight into book form. He had the cruise project and made the fit.

What is next? Well having spent years advising soaps, and loving Jimmy McGovern's work, I can see the SOLO CRUISER books series as a soap, but each of the characters coming to the front in film fashioned with their story. That was a battle, but I seem to have one that Violet's story, as fascinating as she is, is only three books long.

and Panama On Your Six is a rewrite using Tank Commander Kieron Phipps as the new solo cruiser for the next series / three books. Those who know me will see a little of my influence in book 2, The Perfect Storm which is much darker.
All versions of the books are selling and as such will come up easily on Amazon searches, but I have added links. They are free on the Kindle library. What we are doing now is a simple break down into ten episodes and location structures because we obviously can't shoot it all on a cruise ship. But it will look like at as we all know, and quite wonderful. I need series two, which is three more books and I guess it is a five year project.
I also have insisted on Light versions of the books, not just the full fat versions. So there are two Virgin Voyages; Book 1, Virgin Voyage is very raunchy, but Her Virgin Voyage is the lighter version some 2500 words shorter. Book 2 is in two versions which are less than 500 words apart, and book three I think can survive in one version.

Life is strange, but who knows what will come next. The secret is to never say no.

Shooting Shades Of Bad - the Kit

Shades Of Bad was a departure into the web for us. Maybe we won't turn back!

We shoot a number of things from movies to web content, but we have just sold our Epic Dragon cameras and now are concentrating on web content. Our main web series are ‘Doris Visits’ the travel shows, and ‘Doris Shades Of Bad’ the drama series. For both web series we wanted to keep the quality at 2k, which is the quality of most current televisions bought and sold. That is certainly as good as most TV shows if not much better than daily soaps and lower level TV which are often shot at 720 lines and they are interlaced. If  I have lost you there I apologize, but most shows are now HD which the retailers are currently calling 2k.

The camera had to be small and I did not need fancy add-ons like slow motion. I just needed a camera that is used widely on the professional market and the cameramen that came in would be able to use. So, I asked them and Black Magic came out tops. I have seen recent blogs where the BMPCC goes up against some newer cameras and it wins hands down.

The kitchen that Shades Of Bad was all going to be shot in is small by filming standards and none of the walls fly away or have traps. I mean none of the walls are force and can be removed. What you see is the space we had. The BMPCC was ideal and there were few other coices. Stills guys compremise, but we never needed it to take stills, we just needed a dedicated movie camera.

It can shoot 2k raw but that means huge files and is over kill and would certainly be well beyond our Apple based edit suit, so we shoot at 1080 uncompressed. The edit still struggles when the shows get to 30 minutes, but we manage as most of the travel shows on line are around five minutes. The episodes of Shades were always going to be around three minutes.

All stop... it changed. As film makers our ambition was bigger and before long we were testing outside night shoots, filming in the woods and then going abroad. Just because we could and web series did not normally go to that expense. For us it was all a test, and adventure. It has generated a new series, the travel show Doris Visits which in 6 months has produced 100 films, over 80 of which are loaded. Now we have groups of actors and financiers coming to us to ask about the next step; shooting a movie this way.

Stuart St Paul is often called an enabler as he makes things happen. He has invested in many projects, has owned many post facilities and camera hardware and won various and numerous awards including Best Director.
The Hollywood reporter referred to him as a Tri-Hyphenate, highlighting he had written, directed and produced. But Stuart is best known for action and stunts. Two years ago, although technically not working on the set on a huge stunt day in Hungary, he was there when a explosion was allegedly much larger than the tests by many multiples and large enough to swell and burn him. Since then he has been sitting in the back ground and advising as his wife ran the business INDYUK FILMS. Under Jean they halted film production and just made a foray into the web. INDYUK saw the female lead web series Shades Of Bad, that might not have arisen if Stuart was in charge. Stuart was rarely on set, never interfered with Buster Blackledge's direction nor Jean's direction after Buster, nor and more recently Lynn's directorial debut. Stuart, as Jean's life partner just agreed with her to finance the show and permanent equipment it which means they never hire anything. He has then just sat back, watched, occasionally advised and as the others are heard to say, he often criticised. For his IMDB credits click here...

However, after what is almost a two year break from work he has now directed few episodes of Shades Of Bad in a move to get back in the swing. Shades hardly represent the big toys he normally organises and takes responsibility for, but he has started to down size and put his two Red Weapon cameras and the Scarlet up for sale on RedUser.

Shades Of Bad has evolved a lot as he has taken more notice. He pushed Buster to shoot outside at night, then in the woods. Then challenged the girls to write and direct. Now, he has taken a trip to Barcelona with actor Gary Keates and Jean who plays Doris. Starting at 10am, in 4 hours he had shot the 'to and from' the Jewellers shop and was having lunch in a bar. His attitude has changed a lot in two years. But as Stuart says, when you have nearly been killed you think differently.

Stuart then recreated a Jewellers office at actor Nick Simons' house where he shot the interiors of Barcelona. The other sections are in his and Jean's house where Jean makes most of Shades Of Bad. Where as Buster preferred the kitchen, Stuart pushed actor Oliver Degnan for an edgy performance style and a walk into a new area. Stuart likes scenes to be busy visually.

Whether there is visible a difference between the episodes is for the eye to see, they were both shot as fast as the older episodes. Whether Shades Of Bad has entered a new era, or signalled one, a few motivated well known actors have taken notice at the shooting possibilities. They are asking Stuart to look at advising on how they can make their own films with a micro crew. Shades Of Bad has now over 3 hours of edited drama and never had a make up or costume or continuity department. Actors work this way in Fringe Theatre, what they need is the assistance of an enabler to turn their art into film.

Episode 58 - Doris arrives in Barcelona. They started at 10am and were in a bar have shot two episodes by 2pm. The house inserts were shot at the end of the shooting of Derek Redmond's last episode and are actually just a few shots cut in. Click this text for the episode.

Episode 59 - interior jewellers, Stuart was experimenting with pushing the Black Magic PC Camera after reading the manual and blogs on photography because he did not use the camera as well as he could on a sunset episode in low light (ep 61). On the ship on the way home. The episode that was created in the bar before it was shot will still stand as episode 61, but in 59 with no crew and just three small lamps he has pulled the curtains and deliberately worked in the dark.

The music he has used is from the film he directed Bula Quo and his long time friend and composer Mark Blackledge. Again it signals a mood change in Shades Of Bad though the Bula quo music has been used before in the Cat Fight episodes.

34. Jean Heard, who was voted Best Actress for Doris, talks on shooting a web series abroad and the UK plus her travel show.

Shades Of Bad web series shooting abroad and the travel show go hand in hand.

There are many industry professionals on a cruise ship, so it is easy to find cast and shoot episodes of a web series, and a travel show. Enter Shades of Bad and Doris Visits, they both now have extensive and growing playlists.

If you have never cruised, then Doris Shades has just reviewed the Azura and given tips. The travel show is shot on the same Black Magic camera the web series is shot on, and with just as many edits and cuts, it is one of the many travel episodes in the travel show spin off now feeding back to the drama series.

On the ship the Azura, the final episode of season 3 was shot, some clips have found their way into promos even though the episode is not scheduled to go live until 2nd September. Before then, starting episode 44 (click here), Doris has been sent to Norway to collect a package, and all of that was done while on the Azura.

You will already have seen in episode 43, the arrival of new star Derek Redmond who sends her abroad. Click here to catch up.

In episode 45 I arrive in Stavanger to meet with someone and pick up a package, but I am being followed. So I am told. Leaving Wilma in the house with Drek meant that I was not required on the the UK side of the shoot so I got my first chance to direct, and after 40 episodes I felt I knew the show and was confident enough to do it. The Barcelona episodes are due to go live after the Norway episodes which run for about ten shows. Barcelona episodes were shot while on the Britannia. The ship stops for about six hours and during that time considerable inserts for two episodes were shot with Manuel Martinez, actor Gary Keates.

P&O AZURA cruise ship tour and review is below at the end of this blog. In it I tour the cruise ship Azura walking through all the major features of the ship. This was done on a tour of the mirror like still Fjords in 2015 and then on a Caribbean cruise in 2016.

This adds to the many films I have of cruise stop destinations from Fiji to Barbados, and gems like Bequia or botanical gardens. These help you orientate and choose before you travel.

I have also listed the cruises, by their cruise number in playlists that contain the films of the cruise stops in order.  I wish I had started earlier as I only have stills of Asia, India and previous cruises in the Mediterranean but I am playing catch up. Next I am off to St Petersburg in Russia.

For those of you who have never cruised then I hope this helps you. The ships are all totally different so it is a case of finding the cruise you want. Within the larger ships no two people will have exactly the same experience. You can be exclusive and you can party and play.

Some people prefer a small ship, others a large ship which is more like a city.  The Azura came into service in 2010 and was named by Darcey Bussell. It has so many features you will find it hard to discover them on just one visit.

The Azura is a mid size ship that takes 6 minutes 11 seconds to stop when at 24 knots.
Normally the ship only turns at one or two degrees to correct course, but the Azura can go over to 35 degrees. She can carry 3145 tonnes of fuel and at 23.5 knots is using 260 tonnes per day.

There are 900 cabins with private balconies and a number of staterooms. It has stabilisers that go out when seas are rough.

Cruising can be a totally casual affair, buffets and never needing to dress. Or, they can be an excuse to dress up and engage in formal nights and visit the fine dining spots. Cruising can be about 'Food Heroes'. Like many celebrities they can be found visiting on some cruises and they leave their mark and menus. Select dining and fine wines are part of cruise life like dressing up for formal nights. The Atul Kochhar's Sindhu restaurant, Olly Smith's Glass House, the Epicurean experience, the Beach House and others are all mentioned. With a shopping centre, medical centre, laundry, and every other facility you would need, the Azura

normally has about 1174 crew to 3000 passengers. P&O have a great web site and list many details and crew there.

Azura is a stylish ship that was built by Fincantieri in Italy, started in 2008 finished in 2010 and has a gross tonnage of 115,055 MT, its displacement is 53,967 MT. Length is 288.6 meters and width is 36 meters which is 2 meters too wide to go through the Panama Canal. The bridge is 50.5 meters wide. Deck 15 and above is made of aluminium, the decks get lighter as you go up. The heavy plant, engines and sewage pumps, propellors and fresh water making equipment put most of the weight at the bottom. Fresh water is made by 3 large evaporators that can produce 90,000 gallons per hour.

If you are thinking of a first cruise, then the Azura is not a bad choice. You can then decide if you wish to try a smaller or a larger ship, or, it's sister ship the Ventura. Here is my tour, please share.

New black actor could be mega star - Derek Redmond in Shades Of Bad

There is nothing more exciting than discovering talent !

Stuart St Paul met Derek Redmond on the 'after dinner speaker's circuit ', where they have both often been on the same bill. The two have became friends.

When Stuart suggested that Jean was looking for an actor to play a complex part and they both thought he would be perfect, Derek was interested.
The rest is now history.

Derek is an Olympian, won the Men's 4x400 metres event at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan and 400m with team mates Roger Black, Kriss Akabusi and John Regis. St Paul had already worked with Akabusi on the TV show 'Do You Want A Smack'. So there was even more common ground. It is funny how this really is a small business and the players have long and inter tangled roots.

Explaining the part was not easy because Redmond appears as a bad guy, the kind who would kill anyone, but, he is there to save Doris from someone even worse. To say more would give too much away, but Derek, playing Drek, sends Doris Shades to Norway to collect a package and waits for her at home with the annoying Wilma.

These international sports stars have charisma, they have something special which is why they make such great presenters and panel show guests.

They already live the life of strange hours, world travel, TV cameras, panel shows and being under the press microscope at every move.

However, as celebrities, guests and keynote speakers they are plied with more bucks than actors are thrown, so it was the friendship that swung the deal and the fact that as it was a web series  his contribution could be shot around his very busy calendar.

Even then he often arrived late from another engagement, had to leave for an engagement, and while there Sky Sports were sending a satellite unit to the set to have him go live into the news. Shades Of Bad was a perfect fit as all the players have other engagements, but it did make scheduling a little bit of a challenge.

Stuart confirms that these were the first episodes that actress Jean Heard directed, purely as she was not in the UK in the story and as such was without a job while they were to film, and Buster Blackledge had gone off onto a movie.

Jean's Norwegian sections had been shot ages ago, long before Derek was cast, which to some extent sadly locked the flexibility of the script.

However it has all been made to work and series three ends with him able to come back for another season should he want to, however, the reality is that season 4 will no doubt start shooting around the time the Rio Olympics are on and Derek will be busy as a commentator or expert on a TV network somewhere round the world.

27. Shades Of Bad is back, and bigger - season 3 starts this week.

The new season of the very dark and very dry comedy Shades OF Bad starts this week and runs for the next 20 weeks. Out with the old cast, in with the new ... and as Doris says, it is not illegal to eat other humans in the United Kingdom, a fact gleaned from a very intellectual TV quiz show she saw hosted by Stephen Fry. New star cast, new locations, foreign countries...... An Olympian, an EastEnders actor and Norway and Barcelona. And it is all on the web !!!!! (click this para for trailer)

So, 'all change' on the web TV series Shades OF Bad which has been honoured to have almost never left the world web TV series chart top twenty since its release mid last year. For this small UK series to up there in the chart complied by Roger Newcombe's team at We Love Soaps and Indie Series Network in the USA has been an honour and a surprise. But, in true soap tradition, the cast must die, long live the cast. Replacement just happens a lot faster on the web, and a little odder. Maybe it is slower if you watch each episode by week and they come in coffee bite sizes, but add the minutes together and it all happens rather fast.

To recap when the two actresses sat in their kitchen and said let's make a show for the web, they never expected it to go this far.  But Jean Heard had always produced and had just lowered the final curtain on a touring play called Mutton, which had run for seven years in various forms. She is also a co owner of IndyUK Films and has produced movies, and IndyUK owned kit ... Dragon and Scarlet Cameras etc....  However, this proposal morphed into another challenge that required it's own kit and staff and Shades Of Bad TV Channel was born.

If you look at the YouTube Channel now it is only just beginning to look like a TV Channel, but small companies like Jean's may be forging a change that only the future knows the answer to. As broadcast TV fast becomes a thing of the past, content ownership is the new buzz word.

It will be interesting to see if each needs their own Channel and needs to be grouped as playlists. The growth of social media is so fast this kind of research can only be done by small channel owners.
The playlists are clearly laid out on the Shades Of Bad TV Channel and it is worth a look just to study the work that she and her small team have put into it.

1. The Shades OF Bad series lists 40 coffee bite episodes up and they have 20 more auto scheduled for release. 
2. Doris Visits is a spin off series which is aimed at a market they have decided to study. It is a travel show which mainly hits cruise stops and takes an unusual informal look at places. There are 20 films up and another 7 in the edit and they visit Russia in June and the Canaries in November.
3. How To Film is a web series that is there to help enable people to make their own shows. Having made a five features and now running the channel there are many useful tips to share and this series will form into a logical series. There are about 5 films on the playlist and the gaps will be filled.

4. Is the behind the scenes material for the film FREIGHT they made on sex trafficking, and the book FREIGHT is currently being proofed for publication within weeks.
5. Bula Quo is the site they have using the material they have with the UK rock legends Status Quo and film they made with them in Fiji. They have untold footage and interviews that have never been seen, that will be edited and added this year.
6. Then there is Ask Doris, an out of the box series where she just mends stuff. This has been tested and the list will be added soon.

Eventually the Freight (DorisTV) and Bula Quo channels will return the honour by reflecting the lists there, but building the film output on Create Space and owning the unsold territorial distribution rights is also ongoing, and the novels of the work. The integration is one massive experiment of owning content.

Back to Shades OF Bad and the new Season. The first two seasons never strayed far from the kitchen and never left the house. It was a self imposed rule set, that each episode would be 3 to 5 minutes long, released weekly and had to end on a high.

The show has reached as high as number 2 in the Indie Series chart and Jean Heard has been voted Best Actress twice. Season three sees more dead bodies, a greater foray into crime and off to Norway and Barcelona. The current cast start to fall and in comes the new. They may have discovered a hidden acting talent and thrust a new male black actor into the market place with Derek Redmond. He is a World Champion and Olympian and plays Drek. Oliver Degnan who Jean used n IndyUK's first film The Usual Children, appears as Ben Manstead. The Bin Man who is dead. Manuel Martinez appears as the fixer in Barcelona, and then she can't get rid of him. And finally Nej Adamson, the pub quiz question actor ... who was the very first face on EastEnders ????  Nej..... appears. Quite a new cast as Shades OF Bad stretches out for a new season.

The Singularity Effect - when crew act and present, and actors become technical and film themselves.

The Singularity Effect is the term used when two areas condense into one. The Bus Driver also takes the fares .. then the bus conductor vanishes. Soon there will be card payment on buses with driverless buses, then no one works.
Long gone are the guys who lit the gas lamps in streets and the telephone exchange people connecting calls with cables. Life moves on... so who will vanish next?

Before you say never, it could never happen in film, just about every industry has condensed jobs and the president has already been set in media. Siting just three examples - Millionaire YouTubers with millions of viewers and subscribers have already taken this well beyond journalists and TV news reporters sending their own piece back by their own phone. Actors now have their own voice over studio at home. Singers perform to a backing track whilst sporting the ironic 'keep music live' sticker in the car. Huge numbers of media people have vanished who is next? Because there will be a next and the wall falls down fast when it starts to go.

Sure there are still musicians, some have to pretend to mime to backing tracks, some play live, so there will always be survivors.

Let's be outrageous, if broadcast TV steps aside to selectable downloads, ... in other words lets assume Netflix overtakes the BBC .....then gone will be commissioning editors, the producers who sell to them, the program schedulers and many executives who thought they had more protection than a coal miner. Sadly, with the video juke box very few of them are needed.

It has happened, it is fast becoming past tense. The web series phenomenon is huge, not just large, it is huge. Furthermore BBC3 has gone on-line, Netflix spends more money on new drama than the BBC, so does Amazon and Sky.

Can the Broadcast soaps be justified in their current form when so many web performers are now making them with small crews in their bedrooms and kitchens. Time will change things, of that there is no doubt. Is it time you owned your own content and started a channel? The Emmys have announced they were to open a new award category for them!

What will change it is someone making it easy to find and view the many web series and maybe that is the next generations of MCN's, and if you do not know what an MCN is then my guess is you need to do a little catch up. Disney have now started as a label running the web program makers and it is called MAKERS STUDIOS, there are others, there will be others.

Kids watch Sky+ as their parents ignore them whilst they sit and eat in franchise restaurants. You have seen it. These kids grow up downloading. Lets be honest, we view on tablets and phones and it is not going backwards. We are thought to own 4 screens each at the moment and expected to own ten screens each within two years. Media is out there and made by a newer media educated generation.

So, the fact that Shades Of Bad now has NO technical crew is maybe not unusual, the actors in this case have taken over like the singers who sing to backing tracks and operate the tech stuff themselves. There was a director and a sound mixer / composer, but Buster left to do a movie and it was a case of necessity. Now Jean who plays Doris is making a series of films on how to make a web series, run a channel and market it, as well as her travel show spin off and the web series.And it is not preaching, she is just saying this is us learning, we are learning, this is how we make a weekly soap. She openly admits the use of filters on lens and colouring the end product is the biggest challenge, but one she will conquer.

Traditional Broadcasters are as important as the landline phone you leave at home.

Yesterday's generation of broadcast and media workers were never taught how to do it, they did one job in a huge team.
This new generation study it, study every job, do every job, and have a whole different mind set. They learn do degrees of competence that allow new forms of creativity.
So, will it all become one job? Like the journalist who has to send his own piece back, the news cameraman is no longer a must have item. The drama cameraman might be next, certainly hundreds of self made series on YouTube say maybe. And many are old school, Shades OF Bad is made by a senior group who are self taught and they are not alone.

YouTube has allowed groups of people who are not serviced by traditional broadcasters have their entertainment. There are channels on how to put make up on black skin, how to wear a hijab and shows for the grey pounders. Seriously, it is not just gamers, they just happened to come first.

Web Series are made by small teams of new-wave creative talent. Are they actors? Are they technicians? Are they YouTubers? Are they media Punks? What will their collective noun be..... program makers? In the past, program makers were not really program makers but enablers who watched many people do it for them.

Jean Heard and Lynn Beaumont decided one day to make a web series. Now there is DorisTV, or ShadesOfBadTV whatever the eventual branding becomes. But Jean now produces a channel and decides on program strains and is nearly one year into a 3 year plan. to have 300 films up.
Every part of the film making is done at home by the team and with 40 episodes up and 20 auto scheduled to release until August Jean plans to take the travel show to Russia and beyond.

As well as the travel show Jean is shooting a playlist of tips, based on how she makes her channel. She expects to add one film a month to that list at least.
The travel show will be another two films per month, the drama is one per week.

Take a look at some of the available films. The Kit Jean uses to shoot  and post the web TV material. Jean takes you through the basic kit they use to shoot all the DorisTV web shows. Camera, Microphones, lights, grip equipment.

Using Puraleyes, the way she has learnt the way to sync the sound back to picture when shooting the drama series where the sound is recorded separately on many microphones into a TASCAM DR70D.

Final Cut Pro, starting a project in FCP, building a library, and dictating the destination of Cache, Render, and back up files. This video shows how the Library structure is set up and how you stop the files FCP makes from just filling your hard drive.

Where and how to place a Lavalier Microphone on an actress under the clothes, with the lead hidden. And also how to stop and avoid clothes noise given the movement they have to perform. The performers started by being responsible for their own microphones, testing them, and putting them away. Now they do the camera as well, download the material and edit.

Final Cut Pro, first editing of picture and sound, tricks on editing. Jean shows how she moves clips, moves groups of clips, detaches the audio and overlap picture on another clips sound. How to over lap sound edits so you cannot hear the, and move the sound edit away from the picture edit. Then how to lay a buzz atmosphere track over a number of video clips.

There is also a video showing how she now chooses the music from the written cues, and lays 'music on pictures'. Jean now does this because after 38 episodes of sending the sound to the composer and he did the sound and music mix and decisions, she now has to do it all. Start to end. Now the sound and music has to be done by Jean too, but composer to Mark Blackledge has given her a library of music cues from the first 10 episodes that is about 30 minutes of music.

For future film makers doing it all will be the norm' to multi task. Even now broadcast crews are getting smaller driven by easier technology and lower budgets.

The world has changed and the way people accept their media is no longer at home on the huge TV. Even if it is, those TV's are for the first time beginning to be smart; Android powered super UHD 4K TV's and yet broadcasters still shoot major TV shows on 2k cameras with editors that then reframe smaller..... go figure. The soaps are shot on interlaced sub 2k cameras.

The world has changed. It is no wonder the new YouTuber generation of film makers and entertainers have grown into this profession holding a camera, knowing how to edit, and being very confident in front of camera.
It is a 'duel'. Yes, the, 'you shoot me and then I'll shoot you', syndrome is here. Singularity has happened, media is now downloaded, and not just Netflix but BBC3 have now proved that.

26. Scheduling web episodes in advance and expanding your channel, and new channel trailer

It is every web channel's wish to have episodes scheduled in advance and this is the first time we have achieved it. The films are loaded and to the right there is the word SCHEDULED, they are scheduled to automatically release on the date and time chosen.

Now the episodes are loading for season 3, and will automatically release from the 15th April with a great exterior episode (Shades OF Bad has up to now been shot in the kitchen), when the girls go to dump a body.

But the look of Shades Of Bad TV is changing completely, albeit slowly and slower than we would like. The channels for our feature films FREIGHT and BULA quo are now connected to the Shades Of Bad TV channel on You Tube, and the connections begin to reverse. If you look at the channel now it looks a little like this.

For the first time we have a channel trailer. That was just laziness on our part, we just never cut one. Now there is one up, not doubt we will wish to change it every week. That won't happen.

Next is the Shades Of Bad Playlist with 40 films up and another 20 episodes scheduled. There is a test there at the start of the first 5 episodes cut together into a longer format.

The next list is the Doris Visits list and we have St Lucia and St. Marteen in the edit with a few others. We next visit Denmark and Russia which is why we need the scheduler.

Then the first play list of one of our feature films, Bula Quo which has 250,000 views. This is now linked across though we need to do more work to link it to the others. Easy we know, but the jobs fall into a list. Released by UNIVERSAL.

Then there is a list for the film Freight, our harsh film on sex trafficking released by ICON. Both the above films are sold by Metrodome and were at Berlin and will be at Cannes again. Freight 2 is on the cards and looks like it will be the next feature we attempt now, though history tells us that it never turns out as expected. The novel FREIGHT is out in may.

Maybe we will connect our other films this year, Devil's Gate, The Scarlet Tunic and The Usual Children. However, they are not even on a list yet!

So, season 3 of Shades Of Bad goes to Norway and Barcelona, stars the world champion and Olympian Derek Redmond and Manuel Martinez as well as an old buddy from many films ago, Oliver Degnan. It is about time you click here and watched the short channel trailer for a little taste.

25. 7th Annual Indie Series Awards Best Guest actor nominee killed

7th Annual Indie Series Awards Best Guest actor nominee killed ... a woman scorned.

The 7th Annual Indie Series Awards were held on Wednesday, April 6, at the historic El Portal Theatre, hosted by Eric Martsolf and Jen Lilley. The nomination for the female lead web series Shades Of Bad was for Richard Beaumont as best guest actor at the start of Season 2. 

So the female leads killed him off. That will teach him.

This is truly is a landmark end of Season 2; episode 40 of Shades Of Bad which sees 'the lady serial killers in training' peak and leave the kitchen and house for the very first time! They have to dispose of their first dead body. The dark humour is at it's darkest in this special episode. Doris fires out suggestions as to what they should do with the body as Wilma ponders becoming a romantic author.

While the Dexter-like characters develop, remember it is Doris's house, so visually the garden is over-the-top Desperate Housewives! Buster has LED strip lights all round the pool in the garden which has a lit fountain. Watch and share.....

Where next?

The serial may appear to have peaked, but will return after a few weeks of celebration with Season 3 which is all but shot. Here is a teaser with one of the new stars, Olympian and World Champion Derek Redmond playing the gangster Drek who headhunts Doris for greater things and sees the ambitions of the show escalate along with her greed for personal success. Season three will start in a couple of weeks.

So Season 3, with Shades Of Bad's very own version of Idris will commence in a few weeks as the Rio Olympics get nearer - funny that (a line he comes out with when referring to 'white powder').

24. Shades OF Bad director's cut, cutting 3 minute eps into long form.

Shades Of Bad is a story of dark wit, misunderstanding and innuendo. 

It has a new format and a new beginning, now is the time to start watching 

Doris is a strong woman, not to be melded with. But, she wakes up one morning to find her husband has not come home. She knows he is never coming home. Not because he has left for good, but because she has made a decision. She has decided he is no longer welcome. It is one of the hardest decisions any woman makes, far harder than saying yes to a proposal, then getting married. The end of a relationship is a huge decision. Moreover, it is a huge turning point in anyone’s life, not least Doris’s life. Everything changes for she is now alone. A woman against the world, and she is not, never has been, never will be a loser. Doris is a powerful woman.

The question is how to move forward, what to do, how does the new Doris Shades develop? Jean's blog on playing Doris is insightful. It might be worth coming back for after this blog on how the three minute format is so different when played in longer form which is now available.

Doris the character starts determined to kill her husband and ensure she does not take the blame. She plans and the reveal cuts deep. The second part, not taking the blame, is as important as the first but life never works out exactly as planned. 

The best laid plans go wrong and Doris Shades accidentally becomes a serial killer bringing to the kitchen the zero remorse decision making that her neighbours commute to the city each morning to work, she begins an incredible ‘work from home’ business. The thing about a suburban housewife like Doris is, that no one will suspect her. Released in three minute coffee break or bus stop size episodes that entrance to the story took five weeks or five episodes to tell. And whilst that format has it's place our largest request was for longer episodes. 

We did a test months ago and discovered the show played so differently it was not a simple request. Here were our first bullet point findings from the initial internal viewings of the longer show.

1. Wow, it plays so much better, so much more powerful.

2. In longer form we will have to throw out junk. It demands harder reductive edits especially episodes 10 to 15.
3. There is an opportunity to make this so much better by adding new content in the form of another dimension (see below)

The desire to improve what was there, and that it was possible has long been on the cards but the work on the TV Channel's new content still consumes Jean's working day and edit suit. However the first mega episode is done and released for public reaction. Please leave comments.

The 'smart' annotation, if it works on your device slips you back to the coffee break episode 6 and for the time being you will have to continue with the three minute episodes because the edits require time and consideration and are not a simple function. We would like to see your comments. The great thing about the web is that the audience can be inclusive. 

If you have never watched the show then now is the time to start.

This new first episode may yet change again because the team really wanted to give it new life, that new dimension. However the release was forced by Stuart being on BBC's TOO MUCH TV last night with Emma Bunton and Rufus Hound (Tue 8th March) and giving Shades Of Bad web series just a glancing mention. We decided to release it without the added dimension.

The second and third mega episodes need considered editing and then a music re-score, though we are now more in control of that if you have seen Jean's HOW TO video on how we now put music on the show. Then the ambition of the new dimension has yet to be considered and I guess there is no harm in sharing the idea, but first let me explain where the series has gone in three minute bites. In a character development curve of good to bad found in Breaking Bad, Doris moves from Desperate Housewives  to Dexter. Guess that sums it up. She descends into remorseless crime and reflects the nastier side of a society we have grown to accept (yes it is subtly political). Doris has started a brothel exploiting her elderly mother in law by telling her she has facial recognition dementia and it is her husband coming back over and over again. No one has dementia it is a con. She has a drug business she runs from her cellar and that all gets her noticed and head-hunted by DREK, who sends her to collect his package in NORWAY, which she drops in the sea and has to send down four skin divers for …. oh well ….  (that is the shot and soon to be released season 3)

So, the three slightly odd women have killed their first man, cut him up with a chain saw and put him in a wheelie bin (episode 40, finale of season 2), and the bin man finds it (season 3). All these are coffee break 3 minute episodes and that was the show's remit and challenge. To make every episode interesting, different, climb, peak and end on a crescendo. Sometimes, many times, we achieved it.

We have discovered that the 10.5 minute versions view so differently. The story becomes more engaging and inviting. That demands more of us. So much so our ideas were to make the whole series a reflection of the past and Doris, now incarcerated is in therapy, that being the now. We had a new opening to episode 1 that we never shot.

Why does it have to wait? Just back from shooting in Dubai there are between 4 and 6 travel films in the edit. We leave for the Caribbean in a week to shoot three or more travel films, are back for a April to edit then are pencilled to travel to Toronto and then down to Niagara Falls for another travel film or two in May. June we cruise up the Baltic to St Petersburg with maybe 10 stops from Denmark onwards and more Doris Visits.

Given that spread alone we would not be shooting Shades the drama again until July, so those new elements cannot be shot for some time. Season three coffee break episode releases will start either next week or the week after and we will schedule them to auto release so we can forget about 'transmission' until the fall.

23. Laying music on film or web series

Shades Of Bad is a continuing TV web drama series with 40 episodes live (two Seasons), and the third Season about to start and almost fully shot. It has fully scored music.

The scored music from the very talented Mark Blackledge of Tamborine Music, and is done for us as his son Buster has directed Seasons 1 and 2 of the show. That looks to have got him his first movie.

Mark has provided us with both he sound mix and music composition up until about episode 38 but he is now doing a major TV cartoon series and a movie, so we have lost him. However, he has supplied us with a library of music cues from the first ten episodes and now Jean lays them on after the edit. The music totals over 30 minutes and obviously fits the dark and comedic nature of the show. Sinister, funny, sad, surprising.

Jean and the team have had to learn a lot more about sound in FCPX sound as before they just handed it to Mark. So, the tricks she has learnt will be shared, but it will mean the sound on all the films that never went to Mark like Ask Doris and the Travel show will be much much better.

Jean is currently editing her trip to the Dubai Mall. With 2 hours of rushes from Dubai there is no telling how many films it the visit will produce, but whether they are completed before she leaves for the Caribbean is a tall order as three episodes missing from Season 3 will be shot this Sunday. So the pipeline is crammed at DorisTV but the How To Film series has started and by far the most popular film of the first three is the one on placing music.

22. HOW TO FILM a web series - after 60 episodes they show how

A very useful web series on how Shades Of Bad is filmed and other films are made.

SHADES OF BAD web series comes from a team which have made a few movies and where one member spent 26 years attached to the UK daily soap, Emmerdale as a creative advisor; from plane crash to train crash is my pub line.

When Jean asked to make a web series, Shades Of Bad was born and although we planned to be

continuous I guess the odds were against us, however, the last of season 2, episode 40 has now gone live, and for the first time the three women have left the kitchen to dispose of their first dead body. Below in a film on placing music Doris shows how the music was placed on episode 40.
Season 3 is all but shot and it is far more ambitious with episodes in Barcelona, Norway, on board ship and in the woods. Although we can't wait to show it to you, before Season Three starts we will spend next week launching the HOW TO FILM series.
It will go from page to screen then onto marketing. We will touch on the organisation it takes to put out 6 daily episodes of a broadcast soap a week and how those plans and deadlines were enforced at Shades. Kicking off these films is one of three reasons we have planned a slight delay in airing the already shot Season 3.
Reason two is that is stars Olympian and World Champion Derek Redmond and we aim his episodes to lead up to the bug affected Rio Olympics. Eventually we will share videos on marketing and monitorisation. The How to series is a celebration of 40 live drama episodes and numerous Doris Visits films and what the team has learnt.
More films on how it is filmed will appear in the weeks as Season 3 plays out.

The third reason is that we do intend to start Shades Of Bad over. But they will be different. WE will have at least one, but maybe three re-edits of the start of Shades Of Bad in 10 minute episodes. However the urge to add new material still fights with a busy team (who are in Dubai filming and saw Carlos Santana with his amazing wife and drummer Cindy Blackman).
On our return we have the
week to engage the new ideas that have been around since mid last year.
Mega Episode 1 is kind of done and will follow the start of the How To Film web series, then Season 3 will start to air mid March.

It was important to INDYUK to keep the feature film making side separate from the web series and the web TV channel, so SHADES OF BAD TV was set up with their own kit and I guess Jean and the crew were lucky that they had what they asked for. First up in the How To series, Jean starts with the organisation of the kit.

There are a number of hard lessons the prospective film maker learns apart from 'you have to clean muddy cables and boxes', and 'no, not everyone can be a director'.
A great lesson is, 'if you want better pictures, improve the sound'. I love this ironic juxtaposed position of film, because on set without a doubt you are shooting pictures and the sound person or sound team is often not given what he or they require. Shades does NOT have a sound person at all. The actors have to learn to do there own microphones and check them, or they have to do ADR. Here is a great film from Jean on how to place a Lavalier in which they have conquered clothes noise.

But, sound is what makes a film work, in horror, romance, or drama. You can imagine it as you read this blog. You know the difference. Sound is important and in post it saves pictures and stories. See Episode 16 when Mark invested an unwritten character that chatters through the whole episode, it is marvellous. We start with the sound from set; in the next film Jean explains how to take the sound rushes and sync them back to the picture rushes using Puraleyes. For those of you who have to do this you will know the nightmare.

The reason Shades Of Bad does not record sound in the camera is not because sound professionals may suggest the digital recorders are far better than the camera digital recording which may add possible automatic limiters that make the background sound vary. It is that Shades Of Bad the drama uses more than one microphone and as we have NO sound man on set to mix the multiples into a single source as happens in much broadcast TV.
That is worth noting that TV sound recordists are often pre mixers, film sound recordists can be a different art form, sound recordists with no dream of mixing but looking for many multiple sounds and atmospheres they can record and supply.
In Shades Of Bad the multiple microphones have to be mixed in post production. You cannot plug multiple microphones into a camera and record them separately. (not yet, no doubt that will change).

In Doris Visits, the travel show spin off the radio microphone does go straight into the camera with no problem. We have a single source.
I guess if a drama had a good sound mixer on set then maybe he could use a radio link to send to camera via a radio receiver so avoid cables.


But forget that, Shades does not have a crew. Buster has done it all for 60 episodes now and he is ready for something bigger and may have a movie to direct. So has it been worth it. Ask him in ten years.

Most industries have condensed over the years and as students grow up being one man YouTubers and FilmMakers we could be heading towards THE SINGULARITY EFFECT.  I love that term, which is used by Ray Kurzweil to explain the cross over between robots becoming human, and humans becoming robotised. Each industry likes to think it will not happen to them but we have already seen news crews and documentary crews go as the reporter uses his phone or some other device to do a 'selfie'. Actors now work from home in their own studio doing voice overs. One cannot say it will not happen, the web has proven the inevitable, but we should ponder will crew learn to act or actors learn to be technical, or will just the smart ones survive doing both with ease?

Moving on, we highlight the demise of the musician and the orchestra before you feel I am picking on any particular group. For years, the digital orchestra or bedroom band has been mixed on a lap top whilst in a train or a plane. I am lucky to have as one of my best friends and collaborators Mark Blackledge. I have willing given his very talented son Buster the chance to direct Shades Of Bad and I have sat back and blogged for them occasionally.
Mark has provided us with the sound mix and music composition up until about episode 38. We now have a library of music composed for the first ten episodes and Jean and the team have had to learn a lot more about sound in FCPX. Wow, that has been an experience and now she has to choose and lay in the music from the library. So, the following films Jean working the music into episode 40, making choices on what works and what does not.

It reminds me of a lecture I went to years ago by John Hegarty of Bartle, Bogle and Hegarty, I see they are still around. It was the Levi commercial, the one where the sex symbol male model puts the Levis in the fridge.  It was conceived and created with a piece of music in mind. Hegarty played it with that music and the commercial looked rubbish. The room was amazed at the difference the new music track made, the one the viewer saw and heard. So do you see music and sound - you bet!
This is a great film from Jean.

In closing, there is one thing I mention when lecturing and that is TRUST. How film making is assembling a team of EXPERTS and letting them do their thing. On Devil's Gate Mark Blackledge had been working the score and I had been keenly asking to hear it. I heard sections but he asked if I would mind not asking to hear the end, he had an idea that he felt could only be seen and heard in a full viewing. He had my full trust. He added a French opera and the end destroys you to tears - spoiler alert.......

This is truly a landmark end of Season 2; episode 40 of Shades Of Bad sees 'the lady serial killers in training', leave the kitchen and house for the very first time! Shades Of Bad is a TV web series with an amazing 40 episodes up live, and like all players, teams and organisations there have been highs and lows, but this episode is perhaps the best ever. All episodes are now listed on IMDB.com (give us a click and a review please) as it stands up as a proper multi episode 'box set like' TV series that can be downloaded and watched on modern TV sets via YouTube. Smart devices may even be able to use the click and follow on function which skips titles and make it almost continuous.

But, Shades Of Bad TV will continue to be more than continuous. The team are currently in Dubai shooting DORIS VISITS the travel show spin off. The film on cruising the Norwegian Fjords reveals a little taste of what to expect in Season 3 when Drek send Doris to Norway to collect a package. That was not shot as an actual travel film but the out takes have been turned into one.

Whilst the Dubai films may surface it is material behind Shades Of Bad that will be out next week as a celebration of having finished Season 2. Next week we will be releasing three films, one a day from Wednesday on HOW TO FILM. One shows how the sound was sync to picture for episode 56 in the woods when the girls and disposing of yet a future dead body.

This will run into a second week when the films will include a special on how the music is chosen and laid on the pictures. That episode shows how the music was chosen for this weeks grand end of season episode 40 above.

Then, Shades Of Bad will be a new beginning, something we have been experimenting with. The first 5 episodes cut together into a new 'all in one' mega 10 minute episode with a new slant that we hope you like. Then, on the work bench are the next two mega episodes; the second is episodes 5 to 10 and the third 11 to 16, the later being hacked in the re-edit to condense just the best. Then new viewers will be back to the 3 minute coffee break episodes that our regular followers have been treated to.

On top of that the team fight with other commitments are we will be in NY State in May to shoot Niagara Falls as we recce our next Feature Film project...... and in March cruising the Caribbean as seen here .......
